On Sunday night, the father told emergency services there were “disturbing” signs they had fallen into the septic tank at their home in the small town of Helenów Pierwszy in west-central Poland.

Four fire units and a diving team were deployed in a rescue operation, however they were too late to save them.

Two men helped pull out the mother and one child before emergency services arrived.

The 32-year-old mother was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both children were rushed to hospital, where they later died.

Polish news outlet Fakt reported the mother had slit her own throat and intended to drown her daughters.

The outlet also reported the mother had left a suicide note, which was found inside the house.

She allegedly had previously received psychiatric treatment.

The deaths took place after the woman had sent her husband to the pharmacy, a neighbour said.

“I can’t believe what happened,” they told Wirtualna Polska.

“I heard this woman’s husband went to the pharmacy to get some medication because she sent him.”

“And when he came back, everything was already there,” they added.

“The tragedy was over, you could say.”

Local resident Andżelika Kamińska said “everyone in our village is in shock and great sadness”.

The Konin prosecutor’s office has launched a homicide investigation.

Autopsy and toxicology tests will be carried out on Thursday.

Sylwia Lewandowska from the District Prosecutor’s Office said reports of the mother slitting her throat were “speculation”.

“The situation is very tragic,” she told Fakt.

“This is the initial stage of the investigation and for now we cannot discuss any findings due to the victims’ relatives.”

Aleksandra Marańda, from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Konin, said: “Bordering on certainty, I can say that we have reasonable suspicion that a crime has been committed in this case”.

She added that the investigation was being conducted under Article 148, Section 3 of the Penal Code which “stipulates that the perpetrator’s conduct kills more than one person”/

No scenario has been ruled out.

The investigation remains ongoing.
