Members of the public rushed to the victim’s aid following the horror at the junction of Holly Street and Olympic Street.
Despite the efforts of emergency services the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The horror occurred around 1km from the Etihad Stadium where City beat Newcastle 2-0 in the FA Cup quarter-final yesterday afternoon.
CSI officers were at the scene on Saturday taking pictures, as other detectives made door-to-door enquiries.
A number of evidence cones were also spotted within the cordon.
A full investigation is now underway to try and determine the circumstances.
Stephen Blanchard, 47, who lives near the scene, told the Manchester Evening News: “It’s scary because this is a quiet neighbourhood.
“There’s no trouble around here. Nothing like this ever happens.”
A GMP spokesperson said: “Firstly, I would like to thank the brave members of public who immediately came to assist the victim as emergency services arrived at the scene.
“This is a tragic incident where a man has lost his life and our priority at this time is supporting his family and getting them the answers they deserve.
“Our thoughts remain with them at this devastating time.”
