It comes after police, ambulance and the Coastguard were called to Birkenhead and Liverpool Pier Head yesterday morning after the sighting of a body around 9.25am at Priory Wharf.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, which cleared around 2.20pm yesterday.

Onlookers gathered near the ferry terminal as emergency services flocked the area.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that emergency services were in Birkenhead and Liverpool Pier Head following the discovery of a body yesterday morning, Sunday 2 February.

“At around 9.25am, the body of a man was found at Priory Wharf. He was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.

“Officers worked with the Coastguard, NWAS, and MFRS to recover the body to Liverpool and work will be carried out to confirm the man’s identity. The death is being treated as unexplained pending further enquiries.”

Pier Head is a popular place for visitors to the area being the iconic waterfront location in Liverpool.

Home to some of the city’s famous landmarks, it is a well-used spot for events.

It was previously part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the Pier Head still a site for passenger ships to travel into.

The Museum of Liverpool has stood proud on the city’s Pier Head since 2008.
