A STRANGE medieval castle being built on a man-made island in Poland is almost complete, but it is shrouded in mystery.

No one is sure why exactly the bizarre building is being built, and seven people have been detained by local cops in connection with it.

The project, which is thought to have begun in 2015, has been hugely controversial.

Built on a protected nature reserve, it flew under the radar until 2018 when local environmental groups and authorities became aware.

For a time no one was certain who was behind the project, although reports now point to Polish company DJT, according to a local outlet.

It is not clear why the company is building the medieval fortress-style property.

At one point, some conspiracy theories suggested the late Polish tycoon Jan Kulcyk – who died in 2015 – had faked his own death and the castle belonged to him.

The castle is apparently now almost finished, with a facade, completed walls and windows everywhere.

Pavements and extra buildings are also apparently being built around it.

Balanced on a man-made island in the middle of a picturesque polish lake, it appears to have hundreds of rooms.

The walls are made of a reddish-brown brick, and the top of the roof is marked with the iconic castle cutouts used centuries ago during warfare.

Extra trees have reportedly been planted around the castle – perhaps to help the construction site blend into the vast forest that stretches for miles from its circumference.

In 2020, local cops detained seven people – reportedly investors – and a local governor was even removed from office.

Those held by police were accused of causing damage to the idyllic environment.

And various attempts by building authorities to block to project haven’t worked, although it was paused at certain points.

“It is evident that work is ongoing and that the investor is making up for a lost time,” Polish Business Insider said.

The outlet visited the site in Notecka Forest in western Poland in 2022 to investigate the castle.

Sources close to the project apparently said the work could be finished by 2025.

Apparently the cost of the project is around £75million.
