ICE HOCKEY player Mikko Haaparanta has retired after rupturing a TESTICLE during a match.

A puck straight to the gonads during a Finnish second division game between Tuto Hockey and IPK left Haaparanta in a world of agony.

And unfortunately for the Finn, his groin guard wasn’t as tight as it should’ve been.

The lack of snugness meant the short-distance hit did far more damage that it should have.

The forward’s nether regions initially swelled to more than TWICE their normal size.

But they ended up being FOUR TIMES larger as he made an eight-hour journey home.

The 27-year-old was immediately taken to the hospital after arriving home.

And an ultrasound discovered that his testicles had ruptured so badly that part of his lower intensine had slipped into his scrotum.

Haaparanta was forced to have half of his testicle removed in an emergency operation, which docs won’t know has been a success for several months.

Recalling the incident in an interview with Iltalehti, he said: “I have never experienced such pain.

“I am glad that I could still breathe.”

He continued: “I wonder if Mestis (the Finnish second hockey league, ed.) is worth the testicles.

“At the moment, I don’t think it is.”

Haaparanta has made the decision to hang up his hockey stick as he hopes to one day have a family.

When asked about what’s next, he said: “Now it’s about finding a normal job.”
