NEWCASTLE have received an unexpected windfall after Celtic were knocked out of the Champions League.

The Magpies have had few positives in the summer transfer window.

But Celtic‘s penalty shoot-out defeat in a qualifier against Kazakh side Kairat Almaty means Newcastle will bank £600,000.

They have also been helped by Red Star Belgrade being beaten by Pafos.

Newcastle will now pocket £29.1million from participating in the Champions League – before a ball is even kicked.

While the Magpies will receive £1.8m for every win, with a draw earning £590,000.

Teams are also awarded £233,000 for each place in the league phase table, with the top eight clubs each taking in an additional £1.7m.

There are then prizes on store for each knock-out win, providing plenty of opportunity for Eddie Howe‘s side to boost the coffers.

Newcastle have tried, in vain, to bring in a striker all summer, with Alexander Isak pushing for a move.

They were beaten to Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko and want Yoanne Wissa, but Brentford are refusing to budge from their £60million asking price.

Club chiefs have now turned their focus on Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Newcastle have also been offered the chance to sign Dusan Vlahovic and Juventus are willing to accept offers of around £26m to get him off their wage bill following the arrival of Jonathan David.

SunSport understands, though, that Vlahovic will not be leaving Turin this summer.

That is because Newcastle prefer Wolves ace Jorgen Strand Larsen despite having a £50m bid rejected by their Premier League foes.
