Nottingham Forest “deserve” to be treated as title contenders.

That’s what Liverpool manager Arne Slot believes ahead of their top-of-the-table showdown at the City Ground on Tuesday night.

“I’ve always said you can judge the table best halfway through the season,” said Slot.

“That moment is there now, so if Forest is then up there with us, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City and all the others, then they definitely are a team that is in competition with us and with the other teams.”

Liverpool travel to Nottingham as Premier League leaders, six points clear of Arsenal and Nuno Espirito Santo’s side having played a game less.

However, Forest could reduce the deficit to just three points with a victory — which would equal a club record of seven straight league wins, which was set in 1922.

The hosts also have the added advantage of being the only team to have beaten Liverpool in the Premier League this season following their 1-0 win at Anfield in September.

It could be viewed as an unstoppable force against an immovable object with Liverpool the division’s top scorers (47) and Forest having only shipped 19 goals in 20 games – the third best record in the league.

Forest should also arrive fresh having made 11 changes to the team that brushed aside Championship strugglers Luton in the FA Cup.

As for Liverpool, their momentum may have slowed a fraction following a draw against Manchester United and defeat to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup.

But they are still unbeaten in all nine of their Premier League away games so far this season and have scored at least twice in each of their last 12 top-flight games.

It’s very unlikely to be raining goals at the City Ground this week. In fact, it will be a surprise to see more than one as two of the league’s best defences meet in their pressure clash.

As mentioned, only Arsenal (18) have conceded fewer goals than Liverpool or Nottingham Forest (19) with both sides ranking in the top three for xGC (expected goals conceded).

Their last two meetings have produced 1-0 wins for either side with away teams netting just seven times at the City Ground in nine visits this season.

Moment of magic

If there is to be a goal in this clash, it’s likely to come from a moment of brilliance or the penalty spot – Mohamed Salah has both of those things covered.

The Egyptian, 32, has netted 21 goals in 28 appearances this season and ranks top for every key attacking metric in this Liverpool squad. Keep in mind that 16 of Salah’s 18 Premier League goals this season have come in the second half of games. It could be a tense wait.
