THE PAY of top civil servants should be linked to Britain’s economic growth, the Tory shadow business secretary has said.
Andrew Griffith said senior mandarins should have to do more to justify their big salaries.

Speaking at the Looking For Growth conference in London, he said: “The government – [like its predecessors] – talks about growth but it is actions not words that count.
“There is merit in the idea of gearing senior civil servant pay to growth in GDP per capita (per person).
“That might bring a sharper focus next time Whitehall is introducing more red tape on business or not gripping the failings of the immigration system.”
His remarks come as the civil service is under pressure to respond to big policy challenges quicker.
The Labour government has announced that senior civil service pay will be linked to performace.
It is part of a radical shake-up to make sure taxpayers cash is not being wasted.
Announcing the reforms earlier this month, Cabinet Office minister Pat McFadden said “the state is not match-fit to rise to the moment our country faces”.
