A woman has been arrested after a pensioner was dragged into a garden and attacked by an XL bully. Police say the 84-year-old man was walking along Bardsley Avenue, in Warrington, when he was attacked by a dog that had escaped from a nearby property at around 6.40pm on Monday (February 24).

A PENSIONER has died after being attacked by an XL Bully as he walked home before the “out-of-control” dog was shot 19 times.

Cops were promptly called to the scene before firing 19 shots at the animal to stop its attack on the defenceless man.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: “Their physical attributes can make it like owning a loaded firearm with a questionable safety catch.

“The sheer size and ferocity of these animals mean that our firearms officers had to discharge 19 shots into them – all of which hit their targets – in order bring the incident to a conclusion and ensure the safety of the public.”

The victim was swiftly rushed to hospital where he was treated for life-altering injuries.

However, despite the hospital staff’s “best efforts”, the pensioner sadly passed away on Sunday.

His next of kin are being supported by specialist officers.

A 30-year-old man from Warrington has previously been charged with dangerous dog offences over the incident.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is now considering whether any changes should be made to the charges.

Detective Inspector Simon Mills, of the Major Investigation Team at Cheshire Police, said: “The victim has fought so hard since the attack but sadly his injuries were too much, and despite the best efforts of the specialist medical teams who have supported him since the attack, he has now passed away.

“To endure such pain and anguish at the hands of an animal is unimaginable, and I cannot begin to comprehend the distress that his family are currently suffering following such an horrific incident.”

This comes just days after a jogger rammed by an out-of-control XL Bully dog was left so badly injured she might never run again.

Sophie Lindsay, 41, said the beast charged at her with its head down.

Her right leg was shattered in several places and had to be screwed back together with metal plates, nuts and bolts.

Surgeons said the injuries were the same as being hit by a car at 40mph.

Financial services worker Sophie claims the dog’s owner asked if she was all right but then quickly left the scene.

She now has flashbacks and is afraid to go to the park again following January’s horror in Clapham Common, South London
