PLAY has been suspended at the BMW PGA Championship due to the threat of lightning.

The event is being held at the Wentworth Club, in Surrey.

The event’s social media pages issued an update informing fans of the suspension.

Play began today with Tom Vaillant the early frontrunner on eight under, ahead of Ludvig Aberg in second.

English pair Matt Fitzpatrick and Justin Rose are in the top five.

While Rory McIlroy was one under and Tommy Fleetwood evens, the latter aiming for his second PGA win after getting off the mark at the Tour Championship last month.

It was a star-studded start to the event on Wednesday as golf stars teamed up with celeb royalty in the Pro-Am.

Andy Murray, Lando Norris, Gareth Bale, John Terry, Teddy Sheringham, Robbie Fowler, Michael McIntyre, Sam Quek and Clare Balding all took to the green, alongside England rugby trio Marcus Smith, Ben Earl and Jamie George.

Terry, Fowler and Quek came out on top in the morning session with the help of Brooks Koepka, finishing on -34.

While a team of Paddy McGuinness, Peter Dale and Andrew Dale, commanded by Marco Penge, won in the afternoon.

For the pros there is £6.6million ($9m) up for grabs, with the winner taking home £1.1m ($1.5m).
