A terrifying warning was read out to fans and players alike

McIlroy was leading by one shot as he played on the 12th hole.

But fans and players were left panicking as a horn blared at around 1.15pm local time.

Thunder and lightning cracked the sky as rain bucketed down.

And a warning read out: “Seek safe shelter or exit the premises.

“Avoid open areas, hill tops, and trees.”

People did not have to be told twice as the terrifying weather took hold.

Punters charged off the green to take cover from the storm.

While players including McIlroy made a mad dash to the clubhouse for safety.

The threat of a storm had been present ever since Saturday.

Winds of 30mph had been recorded on Day 3 of the Championship.

But the first two were marked by glorious warm weather.
