Now it has emerged Mr Adderley, 57, made himself Commander when he successfully applied to lead the Northamptonshire force in 2018.
His CV said he was in the Navy from 1981 to 1992 but, as The Sun previously revealed, he joined in 1984, two years after the war.
Pals said he served less than two years, spending six years as a civvy before joining the police in 1992.
He was suspended on full pay on Monday.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct is looking at possible misconduct in public office and fraud by false representation offences.
It has served a gross misconduct notice on Mr Adderley for potential breaches of professional standards relating to honesty and integrity, orders and instructions and conduct.
Mr Adderley claimed his brother gave him the Falklands gong but Rick, 59, still has it in Australia where he lives. Northants Police declined to comment.
