THE first polling stations across America have opened – with millions set to cast their ballots in a knife-edge race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

Every state has differing timings and rules for their voting – with the first ballot bases opening in Vermont at 5am ET.

Polls this morning have Harris leading over Trump by just 0.7 per cent – a tiny margin in keeping with expert analysis that it’s the closest election seen in decades.

Trump wrapped up in Michigan yesterday where he swore to supporters “this will be the golden age of America”.

Meanwhile Harris trotted out several celebrities to tie off her star-studded campaign trail – including Oprah Winfrey and Lady Gaga – to the cheers of a 30,000 strong crowd.

Security across the country has been ramped up with metal detectors, armed guards and bomb sweeps in polling stations.

It came as one election official said “extreme measures” are being taken to protect them after 40% of workers were met with threats or abuse.
