RUBEN AMORIM’S potential Manchester United successor has landed a new job after he was axed from his job with an EFL club.

Michael Carrick has been linked with the Red Devils hotseat in the event the club decide to part ways with Amorim following a dire start to the season.

But the United icon, who was sacked as Middlesbrough boss in June, has already landed a new job.

The 44-year-old was hired by Uefa as a technical observer for the Champions League game between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

European champions, PSG, won the game thanks to a 90th-minute strike from Goncalo Ramos.

But Carrick, who won the Champions League in 2008, was on hand to analyse how the teams fared in the clash.

Carrick spoke about how the game was ultimately won by the exploitation of the space behind the high lines both teams used.

Explaining how a coach would train his side for that game plan, he said: “A simple passing sequence with a line of mannequins to time your run and stay onside for the pass through is one way.

“You should have a coach close to a player so he has to run off the blindside of him and join the forward pass, or use him to play a one-two around him.

“I’d then move on to a possession-based game where there is an end zone where defenders can’t go into. This is to emphasise running into that zone to receive the pass.

“Players need an understanding of when to run – the triggers – and also of where to pass. And for whoever is playing that pass, it should not be ‘at’ the player, but ‘in front’, into the space.

“It sounds simple but to have the picture in your head, to know the space is there and then having the willingness to run, those are the key things.”

Other coaches linked with the United job include Premier League bosses Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola and Fabian Hurzeler.

One other candidate SunSport has exclusively revealed is former England manager Sir Gareth Southgate.

However, the 55-year-old is said to hold major reservations over whether he would take the job due to concerns he would not be given the time to turn the club around.

United host newly-promoted Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday, with the pressure on Amorim as high as it has ever been with the club languishing in 14th.

The Black Cats sit four points ahead of the Red Devils after seven games, with Régis Le Bris’ side currently fifth in the table.
