PRISONERS are getting takeaways delivered to their cell doors, a report has revealed.

The Deliveroo-style service at 1,100-capacity Leeds jail is said to be “very popular” with inmates.

Food is rustled up by chefs at an offshoot of the jail’s canteen — named The Lock-In — which makes dishes for prison staff as well as fulfilling the “takeaway orders” made by lags.

Trusted prisoners are then given cell numbers and deliver the grub.

Among the most common dishes in jails are fish and chips on Fridays, curries, pie and chips, sausage and mash, lasagne, and burgers.

Inspectors from the Independent Monitoring Board stated that jailbirds loved the service, adding: “The Lock-In provides meals and snacks each day for staff and is run by four or five prisoners working unsupervised.

“This is a trusted position as the prisoners are responsible for handling cash and ensuring that health and hygiene good practice is maintained at all times.

“A popular innovation came with the introduction of a takeaway service for the prisoners.

“This has required a more diverse skill set for the Lock-In workers as they have to collate and finance orders in addition to catering for the orders and delivering them.

“This has been a great success and is very popular amongst the prisoners able to use the scheme.”

A prison source said the service was a great way of training inmates in cooking, taking orders and delivering food.

He added: “Everyone on the outside gets the odd Deliveroo, although you don’t get as much choice in prison.

“Fridays are popular though as it’s always fish and chips.”
