RACHEL Reeves has rattled Brexiteers by saying she is happy to look at Britain going back under EU rules.

The Chancellor said she would consider a tariff-free trading scheme with Brussels — leaving Nigel Farage and senior Tories seething.

Chief Eurocrat Maros Sefcovic this week suggested the UK could join the Pan-Euro-Mediterranean Convention that eases the flow of goods across Europe and North Africa.

Sir Keir Starmer has ruled out rejoining the customs union and single market but has vowed to reset Britain’s relations with the EU.

Ms Reeves told Sky News: “It was really interesting to hear Maros Sefcovic suggest the UK might be welcome in the pan-European and Mediterranean customs framework.

“We are absolutely happy to look at these proposals because we know the deal the previous government secured is not working well enough.

Shadow Business Secretary Andrew Griffiths said the Chancellor was trying to “undo Brexit by the back door”.

He warned that Labour could be preparing to surrender vital British assets, such as fishing rights.

Mr Griffiths said: “We must avoid undoing Brexit by the back door by aligning with the EU’s low-growth model.”

Reform leader Nigel Farage said: “To announce closer ties to the EU within 24 hours of a call between the PM and President Trump is a totally self-destructive thing to do.”
