Rangers vs Club Brugge preview

Russell Martin said he saw a lot positive things in the win over Alloa at the weekend.

Perhaps he’s had enough of digging his player out in public, as there wasn’t many from where we were sitting.

It was the latest in a line of slow, uninspiring performances from Rangers but a victory nonetheless, making it two from their last six competitive games.

Martin did make 10 changes to the team but the 4-2 win – only sealed by a 90th minute goal – over the League One side showed there isn’t an awful lot of depth in this Rangers squad.

Things threatened to get sticky in Plzen last week too when losing at half time before a Lyall Cameron goal put the tie beyond doubt in the second half.

This play off tie should be a marked step-up on that Plzen side, with Club Brugge favourites to progress through the tie and bank that £40million payday for reaching the league phase proper.

The Belgians came through a tricky tie against RB Salzburg last time out and have won four on the spin heading into this Glasgow showdown.

They’ll also take heart from their run to the last-16 last season where they were dumped out by Aston Villa having lost both legs of the tie – despite beating them during the league phase.

Both teams have scored in five of Rangers’ last six games, with only that Plzen team failing to score at Ibrox in that run.

Club Brugge have no issues with scoring themselves and you fancy they’ll create chances with this shaky Rangers defence at present, irrespective of Jack Butland’s excellent early season form.
