He will use the event in the UAE, with some 160 leaders attending, to push to keep plans to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees on track.

A No10 spokesman said: “There is some significant action that must take place to keep ‘1.5 alive’.

“He understands the challenges all countries, and that includes China, which is obviously vitally important, have to take action.

“We need to see not just commitments but real world demonstration of action as we have done to make sure that this progress continues.”

No 10 said China was a “crucial” part of the plan.

The UK has driven down carbon emissions by almost 50 per cent since 1990 but China has seen an increase of 300 per cent.

But China’s President Xi will not be in Dubai and instead he is sending his Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang.

The PM is attending along with King Charles, who will make a speech today.

Mr Sunak will use the summit to announce £1.6billion for climate projects including £300million for energy projects around the world.

Meanwhile, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer will also today outline how he will make the UK the “green finance capital” of the world.
