He had made the perfect start to his campaign by winning the opening set.
But Williams roared back to claim three sets on the bounce to set up a third-round clash with Germany’s Ricardo Pietreczko.
And Cross was seen during his defeat imitating a sexual act in front of the Ally Pally fans.
As he made his way off at the end of one of the sets he made the gesture before heading backstage.
It was not referenced on Sky Sports’ coverage.
Cross won his only world title on his Ally Pally debut nearly seven years ago.
He then failed to make it beyond the fourth round in his following five world championship appearances.
Last year, he made a surprise run to the semi-finals before being beaten 6-2 by Luke Littler.

But he had no answer to Williams on Monday as he became the latest big-name darting casualty.
Cross’ defeat came on the same night that seeds Gian van Veen and Dave Chisnall were also eliminated.
Van Veen was beaten 3-1 by Pietreczko, while Chisnall lost a sudden-death leg to Ricky Evans.
