The relationship was apparently uncovered when West Yorkshire Police launched an investigation into alleged links between Howarth and a jailed heroin dealer, it is said.

Howarth, now aged 24, has been suspended from the force and was yesterday charged with misconduct in a public office over the alleged fling with the prisoner.

The student officer, who works in the Bradford district, is set to appear at York Magistrates’ Court on March 7.

Chief Supt Greenwood has worked for West Yorkshire Police for almost 20 years.

The Bradford District Commander has been suspended on full pay following the claims.

One source said everyone was left “shocked” by the “family man’s” suspension.

The force said: “A West Yorkshire Police student officer has been charged with misconduct in a public office.

“PC Caitlin Howarth, 24, who works in Bradford District, is due to appear at York Magistrates Court on March 7.

“The charge relates to a relationship with a notifiable association with criminal connections. She is currently suspended from duty.”
