Another teenager, also aged 17, suffered stab wounds and was rushed to hospital but he was later discharged with non life-changing or threatening injuries.

A schoolboy, 15, who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder five days later on September 1, has now been charged with murder.

He has also been charged with grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon, Metropolitan Police said.

He will appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.

The schoolboy cannot be named for legal reasons, due to his age.

A 17-year-old boy was also arrested shortly after the stabbing on suspicion of attempted murder and taken into custody, but he was later released on bail while enquiries continue.

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn said: “Our thoughts are with Yeray’s family at this unimaginably difficult time. They are being supported by specialist officers.

“The incident took place in the middle of the road outside the McDonalds on Old Kent Road and there were many witnesses.”

DCI Blackburn led the call for those who were in the area at the time of the stabbing, or any drivers who may have dashcam footage, to come forward.

If you witnessed the event or have any information which could help police, contact the force by calling 101, quoting reference CAD 8387/27AUG.

You can also report crime anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
