But before the action could start on the pitch, Marseille fans clashed with riot police in ugly scenes.

Video shows the moment that supporters could be seen coming to blows with the cops.

The police were armed with batons and hit out at a couple of fans while the masses retreated.

One clip on X showed a fan fall down while trying to run away from the cops.

He then gets up and is hit by one of the police officers with a baton.

Another video showed police mounted on horseback trying to march fans down a road.

One copper can be seen holding a rifle pointed towards the sky.

Marseille fans had been taking over the Spanish capital throughout the day.

Thousands of them could be seen chanting their support as they blocked roads with their numbers.

Meanwhile, before the match Madrid boss Xabi Alonso spoke about what he wants to see from his side.
