One person was arrested following the violent attack, which took place at around 4.30pm local time in Finland’s third-largest city.
Local media have described the suspect as a Finnish man in his twenties.
Stab victims were given first aid at the scene and police cordoned off the surrounding area – though it was not immediately clear how many casualties there are.
The shopping mall was blockaded in the aftermath, with nobody allowed to enter or leave, local media reports.
Photos from the scene show blood staining the terrace outside the shops.
One witness told Finnish news outlet Ilta-Sanomat that there was “a lot of blood” at the scene and described seeing two victims receiving first aid treatment on the ground.
Another bystander told the paper they “heard a woman scream that she had been stabbed.”
They added: “I didn’t really have time to react because I was in such shock.”
Police reassured the public this afternoon that they had the situation under control.
A spokesperson said: “The situation no longer poses a danger to outsiders. The victims are being given first aid.”
Local cops have launched an investigation and are understood to be interviewing witnesses.
