And he was joined in the stands by Barry Fry – who came through United’s academy without making a senior appearance.

Sky Sports commentator Daniel Mann said: “I’m sure we’re all excited to see Sir Alex here.

“Another fellow former Manchester United man there in Barry Fry, who had four years there as a young player.”

Ferguson and Fry watched as Cardiff won the game 2-1.

Fry had a storied 12-year playing career with the likes of Bolton, Luton and Leyton Orient.

He finished as a player at St Albans City in 1974 and went into coaching.

Fry managed Barnet, Southend, Birmingham and Peterborough – his most lengthy coaching spell between 1996-2005.

He briefly returned to the Posh’s dugout as joint caretaker boss before taking the role as director of football.

But he was banned in 2019 for four-months for breaching an FA betting rule but later returned to his role that year.

Ferugson’s son Darren – who played for Peterborough for a year before retiring in 2008 – has twice managed the club.

He spent three seasons from 2019 but left before making a return one year later in 2023.

He kept the club up last season – finishing 18th in League One.
