SIR Keir Starmer has launched a ‘hug a vicar’ charm offensive as he tries to mobilise the religious vote at the next election.

The Labour leader has tasked MPs with close ties to different faith groups to engage more so they can turn these ties into votes.

And he has hired a former speechwriter for the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, to beef up his team.

A senior Labour source said: “Keir wants to try to tap into the faith votes.

“He is using Labour MPs who are friendly with the different religious groups.

“He has even ABC’s [the Archbishop of Canterbury’s] old speechwriter.

“Keir reckons the Tories usually do a better job of mobilising faith groups than Labour. But it is quite something given the Church of England was known as the Conservative party at prayer.”

Sir Keir threw an Advent reception just before Christmas where he hobnobbed with leading vicars and bishops – including the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.

A Labour source said Sir Keir takes part in regular engagements with faith groups.

He will deliver a big speech on Monday to bang the drum for his version of the Big Society – a move for politicians to mobilise community and faith groups.
