Police believe that the shooting was a result of a dispute between two groups on the train.
Michael Kemper, Chief of Transit for NYPD told reporters, “There were two groups of teenagers riding a north-bound 4 train when a dispute occurred.
“As the train pulled into the Mount Eden station the doors opened up and at least one of the individuals in that group or in the two groups, took out a gun and fired shots.
“People started running off the train onto the platform and more shots were fired while on the platform and that’s when and where our victims were shot.”
One of the victims, 34, died at St. Barnabas Hospital as a result of being shot.
A 14-year-old girl, a 15-year-old boy, a 29-year-old woman, and two men – ages 71 and 28 – were injured, said police.
All five surviving victims are in stable condition.
“We don’t believe this was a random shooting. We believe this shooting stemmed from a dispute between two groups that started on the train,” Kemper said.
One person was shot in the face and another in the leg, reported the New York Post.
No arrests have been made at this time and a gun hasn’t been recovered by police.
The NYPD is still desperately searching for the shooter, stressing that the investigation is active and in early stages.
Witnesses reported hearing more than 10 shots being fired, a law enforcement source told the New York Post.
Luis Rodriguez, 34, said he heard two kids “screaming” but ran after seeing the commotion while getting off the train.
“It was total pandemonium,” he said. “It makes you scared to ride the train.”
Northbound 4 trains are running on the express track from 149th Street-Grand Concourse to Burnside Avenue, said MTA officials.
All 4 trains are skipping Mount Eden Avenue in both directions.
Police are also asking people to avoid the area in the confines of the 44th Precinct.
“Please use alternate routes and expect traffic in the area,” read a tweet.
A spokesperson for Mayor Eric Adams tweeted about the attack.
“While the investigation remains ongoing, we do not believe this to be a random attack, and this is NOT an active shooter situation,” wrote spokesperson Fabien Levy.
