So-called patriots chose Newton Farm roundabout, in Hereford, to demonstrate their British pride.

They mistakenly painted the Danish flag

However, they mistakenly donned the tarmac with a Danish flag.

It comes as locals across the country are taking part in a movement called Operation Raise the Colours.

Union Jacks and St George’s flags have been raised on streetlamps and buildings across the UK amid growing tensions surrounding migrants and asylum seeker hotels.

Two men in masks donned with the English flag were caught on camera painting roundabouts on the streets of the West Midlands.

Similar scenes have been spotted in North Staffordshire.

They’ve been dubbed “vandals” and “idiots” by some, but others have hailed them as “saving the country” and cheered “give them a medal”.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “We’re aware of criminal damage having occurred and we’re carrying out further enquiries.”

Meanwhile, Keir Starmer “absolutely” supports people putting up English flags, amid a row over councils tearing them down, a spokesperson said.

It came after residents hit out when Tower Hamlets Council, in east London, announced the patriotic displays would be removed.

Mayor of Tower Hamlets Lutfur Rahman, who was found guilty of electoral fraud in 2015, has thwarted the Operation Raise the Colours campaign.

The national flags will now be ripped down “as part of routine maintenance”.

However, Sir Keir Starmer “absolutely” supports people putting up the English flags.

Asked about the saga, the PM’s spokesman said: “I haven’t asked him about specific cases, specific councils, but I think the PM has always talked about his pride in being British, the patriotism he feels.”

Pressed if he supports people flying the English flag, the spokesman said: “Absolutely – we put up English flags all around Downing Street every time the English football team, women’s and men’s are out, trying to win games for us.”

Elsewhere, locals put up the St George’s flags on houses and streetlights in Northfield, Birmingham, in what was described as a show of “patriotic outpouring”.

The Union Jack and St George’s flags were put up using ladders and cable ties by a group of residents called the Weoley Warriors.

Funded by £2,500 of public donations, the campaign is intended to “show Birmingham and the rest of the country of how proud we are of our history, freedoms and achievements”.

But Birmingham City Council also confirmed the flags will be removed, saying the “unauthorised items” are “dangerous” and could potentially kill motorists and pedestrians.

The council said that the extra weight could “potentially lead to collapse” in the future.

It comes as Nigel Farage today appeared to row back on his vow to deport all illegal migrant women and girls after unveiling his mass deportation plan.

The Reform leader said the two groups would be “exempt” from being sent packing for five years – but not “forever”.

On Tuesday Mr Farage declared that under his mass deportation plan, 600,000 illegal migrants, including females of all ages, would have no right to stay in Britain.

But pushed on the issue again at a press conference in Edinburgh today, he clarified: “I was very, very clear yesterday in what I said, that deportation of illegal immigrants – we are not even discussing women and children at this stage.

“I didn’t say exempt forever, but at this stage it’s not part of our plan for the next five years.”

Most illegal migrants are young men under 50, making up 59% of all claims, with kids next at 22%.

A record 19,471 children lodged asylum claims – more than double the 7,672 seen ten years ago.

And the number of men under 30 has rocketed four-fold in a decade to 41,553.

It comes as the Taliban confirmed it is “ready and willing” to strike an illegal migrant returns deal with Mr Farage.

A senior official suggested the extremist group would ask for aid to support deported Afghans instead of money.

Mr Farage yesterday vowed to deport 600,000 illegal migrants in his first term in office – in a crackdown he claims will save taxpayers billions.

The Reform UK boss said the public mood over Channel crossings was “a mix between total despair and rising anger”, warning of a “genuine threat to public order” unless Britain acts fast.

Reform’s plan centres on a new Illegal Migration (Mass Deportation) Bill, which would make it the Home Secretary’s legal duty to remove anyone who arrives unlawfully, and strip courts and judges of the power to block flights.

Britain would quit the European Convention on Human Rights, scrap the Human Rights Act and suspend the Refugee Convention for five years.

Reform would also make re-entry after deportation a crime carrying up to five years in jail, enforce a lifetime ban on returning, and make tearing up ID papers punishable by the same penalty.

The scheme would also see prefab detention camps built on surplus RAF and MoD land, holding up to 24,000 people within 18 months.

Inmates would be housed in two-man blocks with food halls and medical suites – and would not be allowed out.

Five deportation flights would take off every day, with RAF planes on standby if charter jets were blocked.
