On Monday, Ellie’s lawyer exclusively told The U.S. Sun how his client “thought she was going to die” while being dragged under the car.

Ellie was caught up in a shooting that broke out in the city of St. Louis, Missouri, reportedly after a man accidentally got into a stranger’s car.

She was dragged under another car for two blocks after the driver reversed over her and drove off.

The maths and physics graduate from the University of York needed five reconstructive surgeries and was in the ICU until last Sunday.

A GoFundMe appeal to raise money for her medical treatment has already raised almost $20,000 of its $75,000 target.

Posting on her Facebook, Ellie wrote, “Any contribution to the GoFundMe is greatly appreciated. Thank you for all the kind messages.”

A man has been arrested following the shooting, which broke out in the Grove area of St. Louis at around 3 am on February 25.

Ellie moved to the US last year with her then-boyfriend, former Aston Villa player Indiana Vassilev when he signed for MLS team St. Louis FC.

Explaining what had happened on the morning of February 25, Ellie’s attorney said: “She had just gotten out of a car when the shooting started.

“She ducked down behind another vehicle until the shooting stopped, but then the person whose car she was hiding behind floored it, hit her, ran her over, and dragged her for a couple of blocks.”

Ben added that Ellie hadn’t known either party involved in the horror shooting and that she was an “unlucky bystander.”

St Louis Metropolitan Police Department said that the driver of one of the cars, a 35-year-old man, shot at a group of people after one tried to get into his car, leaving one man, 25, with gunshot wounds.

Ellie was injured by a separate car which fled the scene after the shooting started, being driven by another man, also 25.

Ben said there was no doubt in his mind that the hit-and-run driver had known Ellie was there when he drove off.

“Based on the video footage, there’s no way for the individual that hit her and ran her over and dragged her to argue that he did not know that she was underneath the vehicle when he took off.”

Mollie Schwein, who lives close to the crash scene, said she was woken up by chilling screams in the middle of the night outside her apartment.

She told FirstAlert4: “I heard him yell, ‘I’ve been shot’, and it became very real.”

Mollie said she also heard several women shouting down the street as speeding cops pulled up.

Another witness said employees at a nearby bar rushed out to help Bentley who was lying in the street.
