Southampton vs Arsenal preview
Southampton and Arsenal bid farewell to the 2024-25 Premier League season at St Mary’s on Sunday.
The hosts will also be bidding farewell to top-flight football for at least another 12 months following their relegation to the Championship.
It’s been a disappointing campaign for Saints, who’ve managed just two league victories from 37 matches with only 25 goals scored.
They did, however, avoid the indignity of becoming an addition to a pub quiz question after moving past Derby County’s record low total of 11 points.
There is still some jeopardy though.
Southampton have lost 29 Premier League games this season. Defeat here would see them become the first team to lose 30 times in a single campaign in the competition’s history.
As for visiting Arsenal, their win over Newcastle United last weekend confirms a second-placed finish and Champions League football next season.
Mikel Arteta’s side will want to finish with a flourish on the south coast having been forced to watch arch-rivals Tottenham lift the Europa League midweek.
And there’s no doubt they should given they’ve lost just two of their last 16 Premier League games against Southampton (W8 D6).
The Gunners have also won their final Premier League game of the season 23 times, more than any other side in the competition’s history. Indeed, the Gunners have won on matchday 38 in each of the last 13 campaigns.
