Evans donned a special Santa-themed outfit as he walked to the stage accompanied by Shakin’ Stevens classic Merry Christmas Everyone.

And Rapid – who is known for his lightning-fast release with the darts – lived up to the festive hype at the Oche.

He hit six maximums and averaged 86.23 on his way to a 3-2 underdog win over Aussie veteran Mathers.

Writing on X after the contest, Evans said: “So, so pleased to be through to round two!

“I was far from my best, and GG pushed me all the way, so I’m over the moon to still be in the tournament.

“Thank you so much for the support, hope you all enjoyed the walk on! See you Monday.”

Later in the day, he added another comment on social media – and hit back at online trolls who targeted him for his weight.

Evans wrote: “Big thanks to all the muppets saying I’m poo at darts and fat haha.

“I’m in the world champs…and you’re watching me on your TV haha.”

One fan laughed in response: “Name me a better sport than darts.”

Another said: “Love you Ricky.”

While a third added: “Looked difficult for you at times during the match but you’ve made it. So good Luck on Monday – play like you can, go smash it.”

Evans’ win sets up a second-round clash with World No. 6 Dave Chisnall.
