The team line-up sheet featured a description of what the teams would be wearing during the game.

The Hatters’ description said they would be wearing a blue shirt with white shorts and blue socks.

However, the Trotters’ description said they would be wearing a white shirt, blue shorts and s**** socks.

Reacting to the jab on social media, one fan said: “Bolton Wanderers’ socks are certainly a bold choice.”

A second said: “There are relatively few times when I’m glad to be colour blind, but this is one of them.”

Many others reacted with laughing emojis.

However, if Bolton fans were hoping they would be able to make their rivals pay for the joke, then they were left wishing for some fragrance as they crashed to a 5-0 defeat.

Stockport scored four goal in the second half, with five different scorers getting on the scoresheet as Bolton failed to manage a shot on target despite having 61 per cent possession.

Following the reeking display of Ian Evatt’s side, one fan said: “I think you’ve got Bolton’s overall performance today mixed up with their socks.”

Furious fans at the ground could be heard chanting: “We want Evatt out,” as the players applauded them after the final whistle.

The result saw Stockport move on to 24 points, one ahead of Bolton, and into the play-off positions.
