A PENSIONER has died after his car hit a fallen tree on a Scots road during Storm Isha.

Mercy crews raced to the A905 at Beancross Road, Grangemouth, after the alarm was raised just before midnight.

Emergency crews raced to the scene of the smash last night

The pensioner was a front seat passenger in a Hyundai car when it collided with a tree blocking the A905.

Cops confirmed the 84-year-old was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

The other occupants of the vehicle were not injured.

The road was closed while investigations were carried out and reopened around 6am this morning.

The death is the first confirmed fatality linked to Storm Isha.

Road Policing Inspector Andrew Thomson said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died, and all those involved in the collision. We continue to offer them support as our enquiries progress.

“I’d be keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened or was on the A905 around 11.45pm yesterday. I’d also request anyone with dashcam footage of Beancross Road around that time, please review your footage and bring anything of significance to our attention.”

Anyone with information should contact 101 quoting reference 4198 of 21 January.

We told how 10,500 properties across the north of Scotland are currently without power amid the storm.

And 11,730 households are off supply across central and southern parts of the country.

It comes as cops urged people not to travel unless it is necessary as travel chaos sets in.

No trains can run this morning as crews carry out safety inspections of the whole network.

ScotRail cancelled all services in Scotland after 7pm last night.

Flights have been forced to divert and some declared mid-air emergencies as air traffic control restrictions were put in place.
