The Daily Telegraph reports that he was shot in the upper torso near the corner of Annaluke St and Riverbrae Ave in Riverstone.

It happened at around 6pm local time on Wednesday night.

Despite the best efforts from local paramedics, Mokhtarian passed away.

After the fatal incident, Riverstone Police Area commander Jason Joyce said: “We believe he may have been out for a walk, but we’re yet to confirm that.

“You’d want to think that in a residential area like that, people could wander the streets at that time of night and be safe, but we do believe it’s a targeted attack.”

He continued: “It would’ve been a horrific thing to witness and it’s certainly not something we tolerate in the community.”

It has been suggested that Mokhtarian was allegedly the intended victim of a shooting at the Australian Top Team fighting gym last February.

After surviving the incident, Mokhtarian cancelled a planned MMA event due to fears of another attack.

The featherweight star last fought in the UFC four years ago against Choi Seung-woo.

He lost the bout via unanimous decision.

Mokhtarian had a record of 8-2-0 in the UFC after his final defeat.
