Sweden vs England preview
We’ve reached the business end of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, with England up against Sweden in Thursday’s quarter-final tie at Stadion Letzigrund in Zurich, Switzerland.
It was a shaky start to their title defence, but England’s opening defeat to France is now firmly in the rearview mirror following two emphatic Group D victories.
The Lionesses dispatched the Netherlands 4-0 before running riot against Wales in a resounding 6-1 win on Sunday.
Despite those wins, England finished second in their group – but it appears that’s worked out well, with Sarina Wiegman’s side avoiding the tougher side of the draw, including the likes of Germany and Spain.
Should England navigate their way past Sweden, they will face either Norway or Italy in the semi-finals – both ranked outside FIFA’s top 12 in the world rankings.
But first, they must beat Sweden in a repeat of the Euro 2022 semi-final, which the Lionesses won 4-0 in emphatic style.
Wiegman’s side are favourites heading into the contest, and it’s clear why, having netted 10 and conceded just once in their last two outings.
However, Sweden have started strongly in Switzerland and registered a statement 4-1 win over Germany on Saturday to top Group C, picking up nine points from their three matches.
They have also lost only one of their last five games against England at the UEFA Women’s EURO (W3 D1) – and are enjoying a run of 15 games unbeaten (W11 D4), netting 43 goals in the process.
These two sides aren’t lacking goals in this competition. Sweden have netted eight in their three group matches, while England have scored 11. In the group stage of UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, no team recorded a higher expected goals figure than England and Sweden (both 9.34 xG).

The two sides look extremely well-matched, both hitting peak form at exactly the right moment. As mentioned, England bounced back from their defeat to France in emphatic style, netting 10 goals against the Netherlands and Wales.
