THE MORNING after pill will be given out free at pharmacies on the NHS.

Women are currently charged up to £30 for the emergency pill.

But ministers are ending the postcode lottery for the pill as part of a major new investment drive to tackle health inequality.

Health Minister Stephen Kinnock said:   “Equal access to safe and effective contraception is crucial to women’s healthcare and a cornerstone of a fair society.

“Women across England face an unfair postcode lottery when seeking emergency contraception, with access varying dramatically depending on where they live.

“By making this available at community pharmacies, we will ensure all women can access this essential healthcare when they need it, regardless of where they live or their ability to pay.”

The initiative, due to be introduced later this year, is part of a significant new investment and reform agreement for the community pharmacy sector due to be announced by the government on Monday.

The government says the move will free up GP appointments, with women no longer having to book in to receive the medicine.

This will help cut GP NHS waiting times – a key government election pledge.
