Network Rail is carrying out some engineering work at various sites.

Therefore, it means there will be line closures and changes to rail services.

Passengers are warned to check before they travel, ahead of imminent public transport chaos across the UK.

The disruption impacts train services in cities including London, Edinburgh, Leeds and Newcastle.

Some examples of work being done includes replacing sleepers and ballast, as well as reneweing track components.

It also incorporates installing a new track, drainage renewal and improving resilience of overhead line equipment.

Sam MacDougall, Network Rail operations director, said: “We’re investing in vital upgrades across the area to deliver a more reliable and resilient railway for passengers.

“While we understand that changes to services can be disruptive, this work is vital to keep the network running safely and smoothly for years to come.

“We’re working closely with train operators to keep people moving and thank everyone for their patience while we carry out these improvements.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the train companies added: “We’re working closely with Network Rail to keep passengers on the move while this essential engineering work takes place.

“Replacement buses and revised timetables will be in place to help people reach their destinations, and we’re encouraging everyone to check before they travel.”

It comes as a major UK train station was evacuated – leaving thousands of passengers facing travel chaos.

London Gatwick Airport Station was cleared of all passengers on September 29 after it became severely overcrowded, sparking major delays.

Passengers were barred from entering the station again until further notice.

Concerns were raised around overcrowding after someone was hit by a train between Haywards Heath and Gatwick Airport.

The horror left all train lines blocked between the two stations while the emergency services worked to deal with the incident.

Earlier, a second person was struck by a train between Luton and St Albans City throwing the wider rail network into chaos.

Passengers were left stranded in the station and on trains as services across the network became severely disrupted.

Southern Rail said: “Gatwick Airport station has been evacuated due to overcrowding.

“Please note that no passengers will be able to enter the station until further notice.”
