TOM LOCKYER is back on the pitch, training with Bristol Rovers, and could soon be returning to the club where his professional journey first took off — six years after leaving the Memorial Stadium.

The 30-year-old Wales defender has not played a competitive match for club or country since suffering the cardiac arrest during Luton Town’s Premier League fixture with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on 16 December 2023.

Lockyer had previously collapsed on the field seven months earlier – during the Hatters’ Championship play-off final win against Coventry City at Wembley.

The Cardiff-born defender’s recovery was further prolonged as he required ankle surgery on two occasions in the past year.

But reports suggest a permanent move to Rovers could be on the cards now that he’s back training with them.

Lockyer first made a name for himself during his seven years in north Bristol from 2012 to 2019, helping the club to rise through the English football pyramid.

Now, after a serious health scare that almost took his life, he’s determined to get back to doing what he does best, playing football.

According to BristolLive, Lockyer is currently training with Darrell Clarke’s squad.

While nothing has been officially confirmed, there’s a strong possibility he could sign a contract with the League Two club.

At the moment, talks are ongoing, but Rovers have yet to reach an agreement with the defender.

Lockyer’s potential return to Bristol Rovers would be a huge statement of intent.

The club is looking to make an immediate return to League One after last season’s relegation.

And signing an experienced, seasoned defender like Lockyer could be just the boost they need.

A potential move to Rovers would also mark a new chapter in Lockyer’s career.

Having spent most of his professional life in Bristol, the prospect of a return to a familiar environment will no doubt be appealing.

At 30 years old, Lockyer is entering the final stages of his career, but he still has the potential to make a significant impact.
