Alice Wood deliberately rammed fiancee Ryan Watson with her Ford Fiesta after they rowed at a party in May 2022.
Ryan, who was a former support worker for the Headway brain charity, was tragically knocked under Wood’s car on the third attempt and dragged for 158 metres – he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His mum, Lisa, sadly passed away in November last year, more than two years after his death, something her family said was “truly devastating”.
Ryan’s murder and the resulting court case was a “major contributing factor” to his mother’s death, they said.
“We strongly feel that the decline in Lisa’s health and the eventual loss of her was due to my grandson’s murder,” said Ryan’s grandmother, Sandra.
Sandra, who has now lost both her grandson and her daughter, told Stoke-on-Trent Live that Lisa’s health deteriorated rapidly following her death.
She wasn’t “taking care of herself” and ultimately died of a pulmonary embolism.
She added that her “daughter just couldn’t pick herself back up from this.”
Lisa’s second son, Owen, 21, now lives with his grandparents and called the pain of losing his brother and mother “indescribable” and added he “wouldn’t wish any of this on his worst enemy”.
He admitted that he struggles to sleep at night and even had to quit his job because he couldn’t concentrate.
“She told me that she didn’t want to be here anymore because of how much she missed Ryan,” he said.
“It was so hard to see her like that.”
Alice Wood was jailed for life with a minimum of 18 years after being convicted of Ryan’s murder.
Horrifying footage of the incident showed the former student repeatedly driving at her fiance as he straddles the bonnet.
After striking Ryan, she knocked on a door and told the homeowner: “Please phone an ambulance. I think I’ve ran over my boyfriend.”
In separate footage, Wood can be seen crying and holding her hands up as she’s arrested on suspicion of murder.
She tells an officer “Just shoot me in the head”, before accepting: “It’s fine, I deserve it”.
The couple had attended a party on May 6, 2022, in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent when the horror unfolded.
Ryan was seen “having a good time” while Wood was “a bit cold” by comparison.
One guest said she had “clicked” with Ryan during the charity bash but felt Wood “glaring” at her.
The couple left the party with Wood driving her boyfriend’s Fiat as they made their way home.
Once parked, she then got inside her own car where she reversed towards Ryan – almost hitting him, the court heard.
Wood then drove backwards and forwards as her boyfriend walked away.
Ryan was pulled under the front bumper and remained trapped under the car’s chassis for almost 160 metres.
The court heard Wood was found to have 61 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, compared to the legal limit of 35.
She claimed she had drunk two glasses of white wine, two rums and a glass of champagne.
Andrew Ford, KC, prosecuting, said: “Whilst deeply serious and tragic, we say this is a simple case.
“She lost her temper, had an argument with her boyfriend when they were in drunk, in a motorcar.
“Things became fraught, he got out, kicked a door, and she lost her cool and used the car as a weapon.”
Wood will not be eligible for release from prison until 2042, something her family have branded too “lenient”.
