Dorset Police confirmed the man’s death on East Beach was not being treated as suspicious.

Air Ambulance crews attended the scene along the Jurassic Coast with teams from Lyme Regis lifeboat.

Despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead on the beach.

Red flags were put in place along the coastline as swimmers were warned to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We received a report at 8.41am today of a man in need of medical attention at East Beach in West Bay.

“Emergency services attended and very sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“His death is not being treated as suspicious and his family has been informed.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this very difficult time.”

Posting on social media earlier today, West Bay UK suggested the swimmer had been struggling in strong currents.

It said: “An incident under East Cliff early this morning has brought out the emergency services, including Lyme Regis Lifeboat and Air Ambulance.

“Update – Reports of a swimmer having difficulties due to very strong undertow.

“Further update – Sadly, a man has died.”

Regular beachgoers in West Bay told how the sea is often dangerous in the area due to its undertow.

They called on local authorities to put more signs along the coast to warn of the potential dangers.

Writing on Facebook, Stephen Dyke said: “The sea there has always been dangerous.

“We’ve been going there 25 years and this is a regular thing.

“Hope all are safe but should have signs up saying sea has big undertow.”

Liz Hill added: “We’ve been going there for donkeys years and agree there should be warning signs up.

“We never let our kids go swimming there.”
