The man was said to be on holiday with his mum when the tragedy occurred.

Emergency services were scrambled to the supermarket on Borough Close at 11.20am.

Witnesses told how customers assisted the man, providing CPR until ambulance crews and cops arrived on the scene.

Posting on a local Facebook group, a driver who dropped the man off just moments before hailed him as a “true gentleman”.

He said: “To all those who helped the man who sadly passed away in Asda Paignton yesterday I’d like to say thank you for all of your help.

“I was the driver who dropped him off. He was a true gentleman who was telling me how much he loves Devon and Paignton especially.

“He walked over to grab a trolley and just collapsed. A lady ran to his side and was with him until the end.

“He was down on holiday with his mum who thankfully was informed in person of his passing.

“I just wanted to say thank you to those that made him comfortable, a real credit to Paignton.”

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the man was declared dead at the scene.

A spokesman for the force said: “We were called by the ambulance service to Asda in Paignton at around 11.20am on Sunday August 24.

“A customer, a man in his 50s, was reported to have suffered a suspected medical episode and was confirmed deceased at the scene.

“His next of kin have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
