Tragedy as pedestrian is killed after being hit by a lorry – forcing M6 to close & drivers to take diversion

A PEDESTRIAN has been killed after being hit by a lorry on a major motorway.

Emergency services rushed to the collision on the M6 near Wigan shortly after 3pm on Sunday.

The northbound carriageway was closed off between J27 (Standish) and J28 (Leyland).

Police, paramedics and an air ambulance attended the fatal incident.

The force are investigating the crash and enquiries are ongoing to determine if other vehicles were involved.

The M6 was closed off for the remainder of the afternoon and late into the evening.

Lancashire Police said in a statement: “The M6 is currently closed northbound between junction 27 (Standish) and Junction 28 (Leyland) because of a serious collision.

“The motorway will be closed for a significant amount of time and we would ask that people find alternate routes.

“We appreciate this will cause significant disruption and we will do everything in our power to re-open the motorway as soon as possible.

“The collision happened just after 3pm on the northbound carriageway.

“Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to call 101, quoting log 0638 of 12th January 2025.”
