The pair, both aged 30, stopped to help an injured kangaroo when they were struck by a car that couldn’t see them in the dark.

The nurses had worked together at Alfred Hospital and described themselves as each other’s “partner in crime“.

They were travelling to Areeza’s birthday celebrations at the time of the deadly accident on the Hume freeway.

According to police, the women had pulled over after seeing the injured kangaroo just after 7:30pm on Thursday.

A second vehicle then came down the freeway and was forced to swerve to avoid smashing into their car.

The shocked driver remained at the scene until police arrived as he assisted with the investigations.

One of the nurses was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other was airlifted to hospital where she died of her injuries, authorities confirmed.

Sarala had sent her best friend of 14 years a touching message on social media just hours before the pair died.

It read: “Through all these years, you’ve been my constant, my partner in crime.

“From laughing till our stomachs hurt to comforting each other in tears, we’ve seen it all and we’re still here stronger than ever.

“My wish for you is that every single dream and expectation you carry in your heart finds its way to reality this year.

“You deserve nothing less. Thank you for being my person, my sister, my partner in every laugh and tear. Happiest Birthday, love you endlessly.”

It was heartbreakingly signed off with a joke saying: “And yes, I’ll still annoy you tomorrow.”

Both women came over to Australia from Nepal as they quickly became close friends.

Their families are now trying to arrange for their bodies to be sent back to Nepal.

Road Policing Assistant Commissioner in Melbourne Glenn Weir described the crash as “terrible for all involved”.

He warned of the deadly consequences that come with being on the road in low visibility hours.

Weir said: “It’s inherently dangerous to be on the roadway, particularly at night and in drizzly conditions.”
