There are four mile tailbacks

National Highways is advising drivers that the M4 is closed westbound between junction 19 and junction 20.

The collision which occurred at 12.56pm this afternoon involved four vehicles.

Emergency services are on the scene.

There is a one-hour delay stretching back 4 miles on the approach to the scene.

All trapped traffic is currently being released.

A National Highways operations manager said: “The westbound carriageway will need to be closed for some time and we would advise road users to avoid travelling in the local area and use alternative routes if possible.”

Drivers not caught up in the tailback are advised to follow the solid triangle: Exit M4 at junction 19 and at the roundabout take the first exit onto the M32 towards Bristol.

Exit the M32 at junction one and take the third exit at the roundabout onto the A4174 westbound.

Remain on the A4174 for approximately two miles to the junction with the A38/Filton roundabout – then take the third exit onto the A38 roundabout.

Continue on the A38 for approximately three miles and join the M5.

Take the first exit to join the M5 towards the South West or the third exit onto the M5 north to re-join the M4.

The news comes after a mum-of-eight was killed in a horror crash on her way to a holiday for her 40th birthday.

Gran Zoe Hawes died in a smash on the M25 between a van and three cars moments after a police chase at 4am on Sunday.

Meanwhile, a motoring expert has revealed that spending 15 more minutes on motorways will prevent a £1,000 repair bill.
