TRIGGER warnings on the works of Shakespeare are a Bard idea and fiction should not be “whitewashed”, the Culture Secretary warned today.
Snowflake campaigners have called for the works of Britain’s most famous playwright to come with warnings of upsetting content.
Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer discussed trigger warnings and toppling statues in an interview with The Sun at the British Film Institute
But Lucy Frazer blasted the idea, telling The Sun: “If you go to see Macbeth, you pretty much know before you’re going in that it’s going to contain uncomfortable issues.”
She warned against treating audiences with kid gloves, saying: “I think we should treat people who go to the theatre in an adult way.”
And following rows over rewriting the great novelists like kids favourite Roald Dahl and Bond’s Ian Fleming, the Culture Secretary said: “I do not think our literature should be whitewashed.
“It’s really important that when you read something we’re not overprotecting the public.”

Earlier this month British actor and national treasure Ralph Fiennes called for trigger warnings to be scrapped from theatres.
He argued audiences should be “shocked and disturbed” when they go to watch a play.
Ms Frazer took a shot at Sir Keir Starmer and Labour for talking down Britain and wanting to topple statues.
“I think we should protect our history,” she said.
“The Shadow Culture Secretary is in favour of and has talked about taking down statues – I don’t think that’s the right thing to do.”
In a blast at the Labour chief, the Culture Secretary said: “Sir Keir does not celebrate the fantastic British culture that we have.
“All we hear from Labour party is the talking down of Britain.
” I think we are brilliant and world leading.”
Speaking to The Sun at the British Film Institute headquarters, Ms Frazer also declared: “I’m proud to be British, I’m proud of this country“.
