TWO senior members of the SAS have been arrested on suspicion of murder in Afghanistan.

Military police from the Defence Serious Crime Unit swooped on the elite unit’s HQ near Hereford last week.

The two men are a lieutenant colonel — the highest rank in the world-famous regiment — and a warrant officer 2nd class, equivalent to a sergeant major.

They were grilled over claims of an unlawful killing in Afghanistan in 2009 and later released on bail.

Sources last night said one man has since been told he is no longer a suspect.

The arrests will be a hammer blow to the special forces unit, whose motto is Who Dares Wins.

It is already mired in an inquiry led by Lord Justice Haddon-Cave into the alleged killings of dozens of prisoners in night raids from 2010 to 2013.

This case is outside the probe’s time frame.

A source told The Sun the claims came from a former Afghan soldier in a unit called the Triples, who went on missions with British special forces.

At the time of the incident, the suspects were serving as junior non-commissioned officers in the regiment’s A Squadron.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed the arrests but had no further comment.

It comes after five SAS soldiers were cleared after a two-year murder investigation for taking out an IS jihadist in Syria.

Other probes on Syria and Libya are ongoing.
