A Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300 collided around 10.40am near Fort Morgan — about 80 miles northeast of Denver, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Both planes were attempting to land at the time.

The FAA says two people were aboard each aircraft at the time.

One plane caught fire as it came down while the other was badly damaged, according to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.

There has been no word, as yet, as to the condition of the four people in the planes.

However, at least one person sustained burns, according to Morgan County Sheriff David Martin.

Martin said deputies were on the scene, going through the badly damaged planes.

He added the coroner’s office is assisting in the investigation, according to Denver7.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board have launched an investigation with the NTSB taking the lead.

Authorities have confirmed the collision started an emergency response in the area.

The airport’s FAA tower webcam captured a plume of smoke billowing into the sky.

Investigators are expected to visit the crash site to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the mid-air crash.

The sheriff’s office said further details would be shared once they had been verified.

Emergency crews are continuing efforts to secure the site and monitor any flare-ups from the fire.

Fort Morgan Municipal Airport has been closed due to the crash.

In April, two planes carrying multiple members of Congress collided at Washington National Airport.

The collision happened at around 12.45 pm when a plane clipped the wing of a second aircraft preparing to take off, the FAA confirmed.

In a separate incident, a mid-air collision killed 64 passengers and three helicopter members flying into DC.

The collision occurred between an American Airlines plane and Black Hawk helicopter.

The American Airlines flight headed to Washington DC from Wichita, Kansas, after an elite training camp at the US ice skating championships had just ended.

Several victims of the crash were child ice skaters and world-class athletes.
