However the forecaster added that increasing cloud will bring showers into the west and southwest later in the day.

A post on X read: “Fog patches across southern England may provide a locally murky start to Thursday.

“Many others will see a good amount of sunshine, though cloud and rain will feature prominently in the northwest.

“Feeling mild once the sun is up despite a blustery breeze.”

Meteorologist Clare Nasir explained: “This morning is bright for many as well as dry.

“Rain is retreating to the far north and northwest of Scotland. Still breezy across many areas and a bit gusty over the Highlands.

“A weather front will move in later on across Northern Ireland and western Scotland with showers breaking out ahead of it.

“Temperatures will be 12 or 13 for Northern Ireland and probably around 13 or 14 at the very best in Scotland.

“15, 16 or perhaps an isolated 17 across eastern counties as we head through the afternoon.

“They are the highest temperatures of the week and it will feel warm in that sunshine.”

Friday will be mainly cloudy with scattered showers spreading slowly northwards.

It comes after the Met Office urged drivers to be careful after issuing a freezing fog warning yesterday.

The national weather agency posted on X describing “dense freezing fog patches around in the south”.

A severe warning for fog remained in place across part of the south coast until 9am.

It stated: “Patches of dense, locally freezing, fog have formed across the warning area, reducing visibility to less than 100 m in places.

“This will make for some tricky driving conditions.”
