BRITS are braced for heavy rain and strong winds with yellow weather warnings issued by the Met Office.

The wet and windy weather is set to continue this week after temperatures plummeted in recent days.

Brits saw the mercury plunge and battled snow in Scotland with many experiencing sub-zero conditions overnight.

Now, the Met Office is warning of “significant disruption”, especially in eastern and central Scotland, where exceptionally high rainfall is expected to hit areas with already saturated ground.

The unsettled weather is expected to become widespread from the middle of the week, but will start on Tuesday.

The Met Office said: “Wet and increasingly windy weather will initially move into the southwest of England and Wales on Tuesday, eventually spreading more widely across the UK through Wednesday.”

The national forecaster has also issued yellow weather warnings for rain for various areas of Scotland from Thursday at 6am through until midnight on Saturday.

Areas highlighted include Angus, Dundee, Perth and Kinross, Stirling, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Highland.

The Met Office say that it will be another “rather cold day” in the UK after a chilly start this morning.

But forecasters said there would be plenty of sunny spells once any morning mist or fog clears.

There could be scattered showers in the far north and far southeast, but these will be mainly light.

However forecasters say it will be mostly dry overnight but will turn chilly once again with a local frost possible.

But the Met Office say this is not expected to be as widespread as previous nights as cloud will increase from the southwest.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, forecasters predict a mostly dry day with bright and sunny spells for many.

Meteorologists do believe that it will turn windier from the southwest later with these regions experiencing some rain.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Steven Keates, said: “Many parts of the UK will see a very unsettled spell of weather through the second half of the coming week, into next weekend.

“A number of areas have the potential to see a lot of rain as well as strong winds at times.

“Of particular concern at the moment is eastern and central Scotland where some exceptional rainfall totals could build up, falling on ground already saturated after recent heavy rainfall. This could lead to some significant and widespread disruption.

“With such an unsettled and potentially impactful spell of weather we recommend you stay up to date with the forecast for your area and keep an eye on warnings from the Met Office, SEPA and local authorities.”
