The Met Office has forecast snow will then return to mountains in the Highlands on Saturday at about 5pm and continue to fall until about 2am on Sunday.

As of Friday morning, snow is currently falling from south of Durness Britain down to Strathyre.

The town of Fort William will see a low of one degree Celsius and a high of eight degrees.

Meanwhile, the rest of Britain is set to see an unsettled day with heavy showers across much of England and Wales.

London is set to continue its balmy spell and see a low of seven with a high of 15C today.

Cloud and and rain across other parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland will slowly clear to reveal sunny spells and scattered showers.

Edinburgh will see heavy rain during the day until about 4pm, where it will remain cloudy.

The mercury won’t reach double digits and will top out at 7C.

On Saturday, expect and bright and chilly start especially in the north and east of the country.

Cloud and rain will quickly move into western areas and then move north and eastwards throughout the day.

Sunshine and showers are forecast for Sunday depending on what part of the country you are in.

Monday will see overnight rain clear for a mainly dry day, but the wet stuff will return on Tuesday with brisk winds in the northwest.

The long range forecast predicts continuing unsettled weather and mild conditions with rain likely to be heaviest in the west.

The Met Office says: “Winds generally light to moderate in the south and east, with stronger winds affecting north-western areas at times, although at this time nothing exceptional is expected.

“Into the latter part of next week and beyond we see a trend for temperatures to fall back closer to average across the UK.

“There is a small chance of more notable colder conditions developing, most probable across the north of the UK, but at this stage any confidence this possibility looks to be a low risk.”

Heavy rain earlier this week caused travel chaos with London’s Paddington station forced to shut on Tuesday.

The downpours also saw Brits heading to Cheltenham Racecourse forced to shelter under their coats and umbrellas.

Many took to social media to complain about the wet grounds and car parks, while others were snapped running through puddles in high heels and dress shoes.
