The Met Office are warning motorists of hidden ice and treacherous conditions, especially where roads haven’t been treated.

Longer journey times should be expected while rail and air services may be delayed or even cancelled.

Both warnings along England’s east coast and northern Scotland end at 10am tomorrow – the third lasts until 11am.

The warnings follow a day of sub-zero temperatures which saw Eskdalemuir in Scotland plunge to -8 this morning.

And the bitterly cold conditions will continue over the coming days as the big freeze pushes into the weekend.

Through this evening and overnight it will be dry for many with clear spells.

But low hanging cloud, mist and fog is expected in central and southern areas.

Millions will wake to freezing temperatures as low as -5 tomorrow morning, expected in Birmingham and Newcastle

There will be lows of -4C in Liverpool, -4C in Cardiff and -2C in London.

Saturday will see the fog lift in many areas but western parts of Wales, England and Scotland will see some showers.

Snow may fall over high areas while some may enjoy bright spells.

The temperature will barely creep above zero for much of the UK on Saturday.

There will be highs of just 1C in Birmingham, 2C in Newcastle and 3C in London.

Sunday will be cloudier with blustery showers expecting to impact southern England and Wales.

It will be drier in the north.

Rain is forecast for much of England and Wales on Monday.
